Seminar speakers:

Michael Jury, University of Florida

Title:  “Analysis on varieties”

Abstract: This talk will be a survey of some recent results concerning operator theory and function theory in "1 + epsilon variables". More precisely, we investigate some of the connections between pairs of commuting, contractive operators S,T on Hilbert space that satisfy a polynomial relation p(S,T)=0, and the theory of holomorphic functions on the variety p(z,w)=0 in C^2.

Erik Lundberg, Purdue University and the University of South Florida

Title: “Planar harmonic maps arising in the theory of gravitational lensing”

Abstract: Wilmshurst's conjecture bounds the number of zeros of a (complex-valued) harmonic polynomial. The proof of a known special case was extended to rational functions by D. Khavinson and G. Neumann. This turned out to resolve S. Rhie's conjecture in astronomy on the number of images produced by point-mass gravitational lenses. Other image-counting problems in gravitational lensing can also be reduced to problems in complex analysis. We discuss the number of images lensed by an elliptical galaxy, which leads to a transcendental harmonic map.

Registration and talks will be held in Polk Science 155.
