MORTUARY PRACTICES OF ANCIENT EGYPT

INTRODUCTION

GONE AM I,

CAUGHT BY THE UNDERWORLD,

YET CLEANSED AND ALIVE

IN THE BEYOND…

-From an Old Kingdom funerary text [1]

The Ancient Egyptians have been historically known for their mortuary practices and customs world wide.  The magnitude at which they were prepared for their afterlife was incredible.  For the nearly 3000 years that Ancient Egypt reined, their burial customs grew more and more elaborate through each dynasty.  Fortunately, for the preceding archaeologists and researchers, the Egyptian’s careful preparations have allowed us the opportunity to glimpse into their past lives.

It is through the technology of X-ray and CT scans that has allowed us to examine these mummies with little or no harm to the specimens.[18]   The following information will give a summary of how the Egyptians prepared their deceased for the afterlife, why they went through such extensive measures for their dead, and what some of their spiritual beliefs were that compelled them to such elaborate preparations.[images from reference 10]
