Twilight - An Overview
Back in 2007, a friend of mine became obsessed with a book series called "Twilight". Though she later learned better, at the time she was convinced that it was an increadibly good book series, and talked me into attempting to read it. I say attempting
because on my first try I could not make it past chapter six of the first book. I put the book aside and decided my friend was nuts.
I avoided the "Twilight" Craze for quite some time until I came accross Cleolinda's Twilight Reviews And More. At that point I became fascinated with the mess much in the same way one cannot help but rubberneck at car crashes on the highway.
Below are my chapter-by-chapter reviews, summaries, and final reviews of the individual books. I have recently tackled book three of the series, "Eclipse."
![]() "Twilight"The back cover (or inside flap, depending on one's copy) describes "Twilight" as a tale of "forbidden love". This seems to be a case of false advertising, as the only person who is in the least bothered by Bella and Edward's relationship and urges her against it is Billy Black, the only human besides Bella who knows what's really going on. "Twilight" is the story of a girl who falls in love with a vampire. A trite idea, but possibly a good one if written with an awareness of the vampire and adolescent-love-story genres. Meyer posses no such awareness, and the result is a book that is self indulgent to the point of inertia... |
![]() "New Moon"The sequel to "Twilight" suffers from less purple prose and bad writing, which acts as a double edges sword. Without the distraction of bad writing, the disturbing themes and characterizations stand out all the more starkly. "New Moon" continues the tradition of having a secondary cast which is more interesting and more fully characterized than Bella Swan or Edward Cullen, the glorification of abusive relationships, and introduces plot holes big enough to drive a semi through. Aside from the the increasing levels of idiocy, "New Moon" is as static and unchanging as the vampires that are mostly absent through it. |
