Parents and Cyberbullying

Parents are the strongest force in helping to protect their children from cyberbullying.  By having an open relationship with your children, you make it easier for your children to come to you when they are experiencing problems.  Children are often hesitant to approach their parents when they are being cyberbullied because they are afraid that their parents will not allow them to use the computer.  As a result, the cyberbullying continues and the child becomes  lonely, depressed, and/or angry.  The child may develop behavioral issues which may cause tension and problems.  THE KEY FOR PARENTS TO REMEMBER IS OPEN COMMUNICATION.

Tips For Parents

  •  Have open communication with your children about their emails and chat rooms.
  •  Make yourself easily accessible to them when they have questions and concerns about particular emails and chat rooms.
  • Be supportive of your child.
  •  Have your computer in an open area and not in your child’s bedroom.
  •  Netiquette-If someone sends them a derogatory or rude email, teach them not to respond and to talk to you.
  • Allocate a specific number of hours your child spends on the computer.
  • Teach them to not open messages from people they don’t know.
  • Teach them to not give out any personal information about themselves or anyone else. (ex. phone number, home address, email, names, passwords, school name, team name)
