COLLECTION OF HELP STUFF ABOUT OFF-CAMPUS ACCESS, EZPROXY, MyUSF, etc.

If your 14 digit ID number doesn't work: Hi, if you call the Circulation Desk, they can check your status and get you back into the system. (Sometimes those card numbers get lost for no good reason.) In the meantime, you can use MyUSF. Go to https://my.usf.edu and log on with your NetID username and password. If you don't have a NetID yet, you can sign up for one from that screen.) After you log on, find and click the tab that says "usf libraries" near the top right-hand side of the screen. Then click "usf libraries" on the next screen as well. That should open up the Libraries homepage in a new window and everything should "know" you are from USF. Since you don't need that 14 digit number for that route, you should be ok! If you need help with your NetID, you can call the Academic Computing Help Desk: 1-866-974-1222 (toll free) or 813-974-1222

CONNECT FROM HOME (short version)

If you are accessing these resources from off-campus, be sure to start your library session at the main USF Libraries' web page and click "connect from home". Follow one of these authentication procedures. 1) Start at the USF Libraries web site at http://www.lib.usf.edu/ and click the button that says "NOT CONNECTED". You'll be prompted to put in your NetID (your Blackboard username and password). You could also click the link on the right side of the screen and put in the 14 digit number at the bottom of your USF ID card - your library barcode number - and the last four digits of your social security number. 2) Start at Blackboard logging in with your NetID username and password - and then click the tab that says "USF Libraries". Then click "USF Libraries" on the next screen. Then you will be authorized to use all of the licensed databases, electronic journals, ebooks, etc. from home. (Reminder: You need to be a USF currently-enrolled USF student, faculty, or staff member in order to use these resources remotely. If not, you can use our electroninc resources onsite in any of the USF Libraries.)

Note that your browsers must be set to accept cookies. Java script and Java must be enabled. see http://www.acomp.usf.edu/faqs.html and click "does my browser meet the specs?" for browser compatability information from Academic Computing.

If you need help with your browser or other connection issues, contact Academic Computing Help Desk: 1-866-974-1222 (toll free) or 813-974-1222. They are geared up to help with that.

If you are having problems with your "205000" number on your USF ID card, call the Circulation Desk at (813) 974-1611

Need more information about which database to use, how to find scholarly articles, or other questions about using the USF Libraries electronic resources and services, send more email and/or contact the Reference Department: Tampa Library's Reference Dept 1-866-550-8036 (toll free) or 813-974-2729 (press 2 to get a human being).

OK! THEN... you are back at the USF Libraries webpage

To get to articles on various topics, click "databases by title/subject"

You can click "by subject category" and pick a discipline over on the left side of the screen.
Highlight that discipline - and then over on the right look for "article databases" and click that -
and then click the GO button.

That'll get you to a list of useful databases. If you click on the name of the database you choose, you'll get in!

USING NetLibrary
Using NetLibrary ebooks is a multi-step process, but not really difficult.

A) If you are doing this from off-campus, first you have to let it know that you are a legitimate USF user, so make sure that you are following one of the two authorization procedures. You can do EITHER of these things first....

1) Are you using MyUSF/Blackboard for any of your classes? If so, log in as usual and then click the tab that says "usf libraries" (and right now you'll have to make one more click to the USF Libraries). THEN... well, I'll explain about the NetLibrary part below - but once you go through MyUSF, all of the electronic resources ought to know that you are from USF and let you in.

OR.....

2) The other way: On the new USF Libraries webpage, click the link near the top of the screen that says "connect from home" and follow the link that says EZPROXY. You'll put in the 14 digit number from your USF ID CARD that starts with "2" (That's your library barcode number.) THEN... you'll get to a screen that says "enter the USF Libraries" and THEN....

B) Ok - NetLibrary: Once you are authorized to get TO NetLibrary, there's a couple of ways to get there: NetLibrary is hiding under "databases by title" AND you can get to NetLibrary books via the Library Catalog.

Once you get IN the NetLibrary database, look for the links that say "create a free account". This account has nothing to do with USF or your email or anything like that. You pick your own username and password so that NetLibrary knows you.

Once you've done that, you can log into NetLibrary with your new account. You can "check out" a book (which means you get online use of it for about 4 hours.) You can create a "bookshelf" of all the NetLibrary books you've looked at. You can add electronic annotations to your ebook - and NetLibrary will remember that the next time you log in. (We've never had anyone have trouble with spam or anything because of a NetLibrary account.)

So - First the off-campus authorization procedure - and THEN get to NetLibrary through the USF Libraries and THEN set up an account with them - and THEN...once you've got all that authorization done, you can search for the titles of the books through the database NetLibrary OR... you can select them from the USF Library Catalog.

That ought to work!

(end USING NetLibrary)

USING ELECTRONIC RESERVES: Here's the best way to get all the Reserve material from off-campus - Just go through MyUSF/Blackboard:

Log on to the USF portal MyUSF at https://my.usf.edu
(You can sign up for a NetID at that screen if you don't have one yet. You'll need your USF ID CARD in order to complete the NetID registration process. They'll ask you for your student number from that card -the number that starts with "6". )

Click on CONTENT COLLECTION tab near the top of the screen

Click on USF COLLECTION (on left side of screen)

If necessary, expand the "library collection" so you see "e-Reserve" – When you click "e-Reserve", Your course should come up with a folder of available readings.

( OR...Your faculty member may have made a link for you through "Course Documents" within your Blackboard course instead. If so, that'll save you some clicks!)

If you are having trouble using the reserve material, contact Academic Computing at (813 )974-1222.

Some stock answers:

YOUR ID NUMBER IS INVALID

Hi, it looks like your ID number is invalid in our Circulation Database, so the first thing to do is this:
Please call the Circulation Desk at the campus nearest you to have your USF status verified, and then your number will be added to the database:

Tampa Campus -- (813)974-1611

Sarasota Campus -- (941)359-4305

St. Pete Campus -- (727)553-3405

That's the quickest way to get it fixed up.
The other route is send email to libcard@lib.usf.edu
Include the following

your name,
that 14 digit barcode number from your USF ID CARD (the number that starts with "2")
your Social Security number,
your mailing address,
and your email address

They ought to be able to make things work. (YOUR ID NUMBER IS INVALID (end)

YOUR ID NUMBER IS INVALID + USING EZPROXY

Hi, it looks like your ID number is invalid in our Circulation Database, so the first thing to do is this:
Please call the Circulation Desk at the campus nearest you to have your USF status verified, and then your number will be added to the database: Tampa Campus -- (813)974-1611
Sarasota Campus -- (941)359-4305
St. Pete Campus -- (727)553-3405

THEN... you'll go back to the main screen of the USF Libraries homepage and click "NOT CONNECTED".

Follow the link that says "EZProxy"

You'll get to put in your 14 digit number (Again...The Circ Department can fix this number for you if it isn't working properly (813)974-1611 )

Then click the "login" button

You should see a screen that says "enter the USF Virtual Library here"

Click on that link

THEN you'll be back at the main screen (!) but NOW the databases and resources ought to know that you are from USF and let you in.

You'll need to start each library session with EZProxy, so keep that 14 digit ID number handy!

Sincerely,
Ilene Frank, ifrank@lib.usf.edu

LIBRARY SCIENCE QUESTIONS - AND ANSWERS:

We have some nice online acronymns sites hidden away. Start at the main USF Libraries webpage and click the link that says "collections" (underneath LIBRARIES AND COLLECTIONS) and then look for "reference resources" on the next screen. THEN look for "acronymns"
You can also find some goodies by going to GOOGLE (http://www.google.com) and typing in
library acronymns
though a lot of the lists you find there are pretty short and maybe geared toward a specific library cooperative or something like that. For some reason
library lingo
works as a good keyword search as well. A lot of libraries used the "lingo" term to be patron-friendly.
You'll want to bookmark this site for future reference (Can't remember how many terms on your list are there - but this is a good site anyway!)
http://www.wcsu.edu/library/odlis.html

Dr. Helena Szepe's "Art of Devotion" illuminated manuscripts class needs to access some manuscript images using Luna Insight 3.5 software. From home, the students have to download and install the Insight software in order to access this collection. They'll go to the Luna Insight collections webpage at
http://www.lib.usf.edu/collman/luna/
and click the link for "downloading the Luna Insight software" in order to read through the directions and pick the version they need to download and install. Once they have that done, they can launch Insight and put in username szepe and password szepe - and they'll get to the illuminated manuscript images they will be working.

BEGINNING OF FINES INFORMATION:

NOTE: Payments made online to USF OASIS/Banner accounts cannot be specifically designated to pay library fines. If you wish to ensure a payment is applied directly to a library fine balance, payments must be made in one of the following ways, along with a request that the payment be designated for library fines:

  • Made by phone to Financial Services to have funds applied to Library fines: 974-4497.
  • Sent by mail to the cashier's office and accompanied by a copy of the library invoice.

END OF FINES INFORMATION

INTERLIBRARY LOAN:

Go to the Interlibrary Loan link from the main USF library webpage (It's under the "Services" column) - That'll take you here:
http://www.lib.usf.edu/public/index.cfm?Pg=InterlibraryLoan1
You'll click the "first time user" button and read through a lotta policies and waaaaaay down at the bottom of that Policies webpage there's yet another button that says "first time users click here"
That'll take you to NEW USER REGISTRATION
Fill out all the info and pick a username and password for this service.
Once you are registered, you'll log back in as a "repeat user" and fill out a request for each item you'd like us to borrow. You don't have to worry about which library things will come from. The Interlibrary Loan staff will figure out that part, but it does help if you list "the Library Catalog" or "Worldcat" as your source of reference for the books you needed.
