Phillips Sipiora

Professor Phillip Sipiora will give a lecture about E. L. Doctorow's novel, The March, on October 23rd. Time and place TBA. This event is co-sponsored by the English Department and the Humanities Institute with generous support from private donors.

English & History Panel Discussion

November 10
A joint English/History Department panel will convene on November 10th to discuss the relation(s) between literature and history. The panelists will be Professors Elizabeth Hirsh, Regina Hewitt, Shirley Toland-Dix (all from English) and Professors Scott Perry and Tamara Zwick (from History). Each will speak for five minutes followed by general discussion. Department Chairs Fraser Ottanelli (History) and Hunt Hawkins (English) will moderate. This event is co-sponsored by the English Department and the Humanities Institute with generous support from private donors.

E. L. Doctorow

Visiting Author
November 13, University of South Florida Alumni Center

Author E. L. Doctorow will visit USF and give a talk the evening of November 13th. Edgar Lawrence Doctorow is widely recognized as one of America's great masters of the historical novel. His novel, The March, is a fictional account of General William Tecumseh Sherman's infamous military rampage from the burned-out ruins of Atlanta to the Atlantic ocean, and north into the Carolinas, leaving a path of destruction that affected the South for generations. The March recently received the 2006 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award and was a finalist for the 2005 National Book Award. The talk will take place at 6:00pm at the Alumni Center and is free and open to the public. This event is co-sponsored by the English Department, the Humanities Institute with generous support from private donors.

sample imageBorn in 1980, Kao Kalia Yang is the co-founder of Words Wanted, an agency dedicated to helping immigrants with writing, translating, and business services. A graduate of Carleton College and Columbia University, Yang has recently released The Place Where We Were Born, a film documenting the experiences of Hmong American refugees.

Ben Grossberg

Benjamin S. Grossberg is Associate Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Hartford, where he teaches poetry writing and English Renaissance literature. His poetry has appeared in such journals as Paris Review, North American Review, and Southern Review. His work also appears in The Pushcart Book of Poetry: The Best Poems From the First 30 Years of the Pushcart Prize. A chapbook, The Auctioneer Bangs His Gavel, was published by Kent State in 2006. Grossberg's second collection of poetry won the Tampa Review Prize for poetry. He has received grants from the Ohio Arts Council, Culture Works of Montgomery County, and the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County.
