Prevention
The following are steps parents can take to minimize the liklihood cyberbullying will occur with their youth:
- build close communication with youth letting them know if they are the victim of cyberbullying they will not be punished
- instruct youth to never give any personal information to anyone
- educate youth about people on the internet pretending to be
someone they aren't (a grown man pretending he is a 15 year old
male)
- teach youth never to respond to a cyberbully
- youth should never meet someone they have met online, unless a parent is with them
- when someone is angry they should never send an impulsive message
- Establish a parent/child internet use contract- these contracts can be found at cyberbullying.us
Victims of Cyberbullying
- teachers and parents should inform the police, telephone company, and internet service provider immediately
- always save messages as eveidence
- encourage child not to respond to cyberbully
- block messages coming from email and cell phones
- if cyberbully is from school contact the school
